Miss Nevada, Nia Sanchez, may have been crowned the new Miss USA @ the Baton Rouge River Center but she reigns from Las Vegas and TheV.tv believe the judges got it right!!! Televised live on NBC, this year’s pageantry gave owner Donald Trump something to really brag about!

The 24-year-old stunner from Las Vegas is more than just another pretty face. She is known for being a fourth-degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, starting as early as 8-years-old to train in this martial art. Before that, her life lacked the glamour she knows now. At age 6, Nia and her mother lived at a women’s shelter due to a recent divorce. This Nevada native now volunteers at The Shade Tree, a women, children, and pet shelter in Las Vegas. While these are interesting facts about her character, newly-crowned Miss USA’ stance on women’s issues took the limelight.

When asked about the subject of the growing rate of sexual assaults on women on college campuses, Nia enforced the need for all women to defend themselves as this issue is only spreading in society.

The issue of sexual assault was further exhibited during the pageant as Miss Pennsylvania Valerie Gatto’s described herself as a “product of rape”. Her mother was attacked at age 19 in Pittsburgh and became pregnant. Gatto went on to say, “Your circumstances do not define your life,” and she was living proof of that.

This year’s production on NBC allowed more in-depth hometown video visits that gave the audience a view into their personal lives. None of the girls were fragile, they were all feminine and a wonderful example of the endless possibilities offered to those who work hard to beat the odds.   Odds that were stacked against a young mother who was a victim of rape and chose to love and nurture the daughter who was conceived; odds against another young mother who found help in a local women’s shelter prove that life can start out ugly but it doesn’t have to stay that way. This wasn’t the usual parade of pretty dresses and rehearsed answers, there were many life lessons learned.
