Casting for a commercial at Creative Network Studios this week has led me to wonder; What’s in a cast? Would a cast of any other actors be as sweet?
Casting the right actor in the right role is like putting pieces of a puzzle together without the picture. You never really know what you’re going to get until you see the finished product. Sometimes it’s magic like Marlon Brando as the Godfather- could you imagine anyone else making you an offer you couldn’t refuse?
Strange thing is, success of casting doesn’t always have anything to do with the abilities of the individual actors involved…You could be a great actor but still be miscast or be an average actor and cast perfectly. It all just depends on the person and the part. It’s a thin line for actors to embody or totally immerse themselves in a part without abusing it as a means to build their Imdb page.
My favorite story is that of Jim Carrey, who, with his clout as an actor/comedian, could have walked in and taken the role of Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon but chose not to. His reason? He wanted the best person for the role to do the film and Andy proud…that said, he auditioned with thousands of other hopefuls before landing and nailing the part.
Correctly cast actors can do no wrong and help to make a wonderful piece of cinematic art…miscast actors, on the other hand, constantly draw attention to themselves and as my dear friend and theater professor Jim Hayes is known to say, “once you realize an actor is acting, the magic is gone”.
Should you find yourself at a casting call here’s a video that (though it is funny) has a ring of truth to it. There are “dos” and “don’ts” for auditions…these are definite DON’TS!
See if you can picture these actors in the parts they “almost got”:
